South Carolina’s Aerospace industry grew more than 600% between 2007 and 2012 with the opening of Boeing’s Dreamliner facility and related suppliers. Overall, the state added approximately 5,000 Aerospace jobs over the five-year period.

South Carolina was the fastest growing Aerospace state in this period, leading a rapid rise among emerging Aerospace manufacturing states as traditional leaders fell. North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Michigan were the next fastest growing states despite lower relative total Aerospace employment.

Washington, the nation’s largest Aerospace employer and net new job creator, came in fifth for Aerospace growth rate from 2007 to 2012. During the same period, California, Texas, Kansas and Connecticut, the other largest Aerospace states, all lost jobs.

Nationally, the industry experienced net job growth of 7,500 from 2007 to 2012, a 1.6% increase, despite job losses in 22 states. In contrast, the overall manufacturing industry lost over 2 million jobs during the five-year period.
